7 Days of Interesting Kitchen Gadgets – Day 1: Avo Saver

Posted on January 24, 2011

You know those little kitchen gadgets you happen upon at Williams Sonoma or even the small ones that catch your eye when just walking down an aisle at the grocery store?  I have a habit of splurging  when I see them.  I am a firm believer in having fun in the kitchen.

Sometimes, these nifty little kitchen gadgets sit lonely in my kitchen cabinet for years months.  (I know.  I know…If you haven’t used something in 6 months, it’s time to purge).  Well, I’m pulling them out this week.

Welcome to my 7 Days of Interesting Kitchen Gadgets blog series.

Day 1:  Avo Saver

Meet the Avo Saver.  I found this little guy recently for around $5.  With a baby who is new to solids, we eat lots of avocado in our house.  I mash it for M, toss it in salads and smoothies for us and use it as butter on occasion.

The Avo Saver reduces the amount of exposure to air which slows the speed of browning/ripening/oxidative destruction.  I want to reiterate here that it slows the process.  My avocados still turn brown when I use it, but not as quickly or as much.  After two days in the Avo Saver and in the crisper, I can scrape away just a thin layer of brown fruit.

What little gadgets do you have in your kitchen that are secretly pining to be put to work?  And what have you seen in a sales ad or at the store lately that you would love to bring home?

Stay tuned this week for my blogging marathon of more fun kitchen gadgets!
